This is the first year of a two year IB higher level course. Biology IB is designed to give students a secure knowledge of a limited body of facts and at the same time a broad understanding of the field of biology. The syllabus is organized around four central themes: structure and function; universality versus diversity, equilibrium within systems; and evolution. The first year of IB Bio at SHS focuses on biochemistry, with an overarching question "Why do the small things matter?". Topics include - The chemistry of life; cells; nucleic acids and proteins; cell respiration and photosynthesis; genetics; defense against infectious diseases/microbiology; and plant science. All International Baccalaureate experimental science courses seek to develop students’ classroom time must be devoted to performing practical (laboratory) work that covers a range of topics and skills that demands critical thinking, independence and collaboration.
This course is the final year of the two year course, that works along side the lecture component. IB Candidates continues to conduct practical laboratory research work that demands critical thinking, independence and collaboration in an inquiry based setting. At the end of the year, candidates are expected to do a multi-disciplinary group project.
